THE EIJM

The first center dedicated to the documentation and the resources pertaining to Jewish music in Europe, created in 2006 by the French Judaism Foundation, the Yuval association and the Henriette Halphen Foundation, the European Institute of Jewish Music (EIJM) aims to collect, safeguard and spread the Jewish musical heritage in France and all over the world. 

The EIJM’s goals

Collect, safeguard, digitize and catalogue

  • Thousands of documents (recordings, sheet music, photos, videos, family and institutional archives…) linked to the Jewish musical heritage
  • Two conservation rooms and one digitizing studio in Paris

Give access to the resources to
everyone

  • The collections of the Henriette Halphen multimedia library
  • The production and provisioning of online pedagogical contents on the EIJM’s website

Make known the Jewish musical heritage

  • The organization of concerts and live shows
  • The edition and distribution of CD’s and sheet music
  • Regular actions among the public

The EIJM’s collections

The Henriette Halphen multimedia library, created with the support of Isabelle Friedman in honor of her mother, is accessible in Paris by making an appointment, from Monday to Thursday, from 9AM to 1 PM and from 2PM to 6PM. The EIJM’s collections are rich and diverse: tens of thousands of audiovisual documents, music scores, books, photos, audio archives… The catalogue of the collections is available online on the EIJM’s website, but also on the Rachel network’s websites (associated center to the National French Library) and Europeana.

The EIJM editions

The EIJM contributes to the spreading of Jewish music through the production, the edition and the distribution of CD’s, books and sheet music. The catalogue of the EIJM’s Editions number more than 80 references, among which :

  • Approximately 30 CD’s divided in 4 collections: Archives, Classical music, Discovery and Musical Heritage of Jews from France.
  • Approximately 50 music scores – unreleased for most of them – by composers such as Fernand Halphen, Serge Kaufmann, Alberto Hemsi, Reynaldo Hahn, Itaï Daniel, or Claudine Movsessian and Martine Vialatte.
